No.5 - Philipp Louven

As the fifth talker of our Speakerbox I chose a topic that was and still is a big influence for me as a designer. ”Dutch Design“ became famous in the 80s and is widely known for it’s unconventional design language, which is especially outstanding in the the field of identity design and branding. Definitely worth taking a look at!

The Netherlands with their long art tradition and well known artists like Rembrandt, van Gogh and Mondrian were a creative hotspot long before “Dutch Design“ became internationally famous. Furthermore aspects like the state’s cultural funding system and the people’s open mindedness created a multicultural creative landscape that offered many opportunities.

Historically, ”Dutch Design“ was closely associated with an independent design scene that was beginning to form by a bunch of designers and studios in the early 1900s. Iconic figures like the late modernist Wim Crouwel strongly shaped the visual landscape through the 60-70s as he designed many of the national brandings, phone books, stamps and the outstanding graphic communication for the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.

Nowadays design became a basic part in people’s everyday life. From an early age they get in touch with design and their intuitive sense of aesthetics gets sharpened unconsciously. Today’s design studios are still influenced by the ”designs of the past“.

To show how diverse and innovative Dutch design language can be we took a look at different branding cases of contemporary studios like Experimental Jetset, Lesley Moore, KesselsKramer or Edenspiekermann. They continue advancing the language of Dutch Design by adding their individual style to it and therefore shaping their surroundings like they once shaped them.

Passion makes all the difference

We love to go the extra mile… to go two steps back before we go three steps forward. To think around the corner. To hustle harder for the best outcome.
