When talking about digital marketing and e-commerce, big player names are often mentioned. Just take Amazon, Facebook or Apple as an example. Around 30% (1) of global traffic can be traced back to another source which – in my opinion – cannot be ignored: porn porn porn.

The big players have been dominating the internet as as medium for years and continuously make the news with new inventions and digital innovations. Although these businesses can be regarded as pioneers of the digital evolution, looking left and right can’t hurt. Let's talk about sex, baby!

Specifically, the porn industry. No one likes to talk about this – marketing people rarely mention it and its web designs or convincing conversion rates are not often considered in our industry. I can hardly imagine a client-agency conversation which praises a new Pornhub feature, unfortunately. I bet it would be highly amusing.

Nonetheless, the porn industry is an economic influence not to be underestimated. It has been affecting various areas, prior to the commercialization of the internet. The porn industry’s format preferences have also been pressuring and contributing to the war between VHS and Betamax, as well as Blu-ray and HD DVD in later years. History shows that the less favored formats by the industry were doomed to disappear at some point.

It even continues to develop further. In the field of Virtual Reality, which has not been able to catch on to the home entertainment segment, turnover and user numbers are steadily increasing (2, 3). Behind closed doors, the porn industry has been regarded as the true „cash cow“ in VR for years.

At this edition of the Gooqx Speakerbox, I talked about the history of pornography, its influence on mainstream commerce and its importance in the development of the internet. This is the way I see it: Modern streaming platforms, fast internet connections and various technical gadgets could not have advanced at such fast pace without the influence of digital pornography. The big question is whether we should pay more attention to this economic sector in our daily work despite its dirty or dubious image.

The answer to this may lay in the previously mentioned 30% of internet traffic itself. Like it or not, this is an undeniable factor which cannot be dismissed. When one third of all global users consumes porn, regardless of its reputation, its relevance in our daily work is legit. We do not have to like it but we must watch pornography's development closely as it will also dictate how the internet itself will evolve in the future.
